Sean 'Diddy' Combs trial kicks off with jury selection
Jury Selection Process
The jury selection is overseen by U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian. From an initial pool of 600 individuals who completed questionnaires, a smaller group has advanced to the voir dire phase, where both the defense and prosecution aim to identify bias among potential jurors. The process mirrors the jury selection method used in Ghislaine Maxwell’s sex-trafficking trial. Ultimately, 12 jurors and six alternates will be selected to serve in the high-profile case.
Trial Expectations
The trial is anticipated to last approximately eight weeks, with opening statements scheduled for May 12. Key evidence includes a 2016 video of Combs assaulting his then-girlfriend, singer Cassie Ventura, who is expected to testify alongside three other alleged victims using pseudonyms. The indictment also references the use of drugs, non-consensual recording of sex acts, and physical abuse requiring medical attention.
Background and Legal History
Combs has been held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn since his arrest in September 2024. He has faced previous legal issues, including a nightclub shooting in 1999 and a 2015 assault charge, but this case is regarded as his most severe legal challenge yet.
If convicted, Combs could face decades in prison, marking a significant fall from grace for one of hip-hop's most influential figures.
