Thousands Rally to Support African American Museum Amid Political Controversy

On April 5, 2025, thousands gathered at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to defend the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) against President Trump’s recent executive order, which critics say threatens to censor Black history.

The order, titled “Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History,” accuses the museum of promoting “divisive” ideologies and tasks Vice President JD Vance with reviewing its exhibits. Protesters, civil rights leaders, and faith communities have called the move an attempt to whitewash history.

In response, the African American Policy Forum launched the “Freedom to Learn” campaign, uniting over 1,500 participants through teach-ins, local meetups, and a major rally. Religious leaders like Rev. Robert Turner and Rev. Otis Moss III are also encouraging public support and donations to preserve the museum’s mission.

Meanwhile, tensions have grown as the Smithsonian considers returning loaned historical artifacts, raising concerns about political interference. However, Secretary Lonnie Bunch affirmed the Smithsonian’s commitment to truth and historical integrity.

This growing movement sends a clear message: Black history is American history, and efforts to erase it will be met with strong resistance.
