India Launches Airstrikes in Pakistan; Islamabad Claims Downing of Five Indian Jets Amid Escalating Tensions

Tensions between nuclear-armed India and Pakistan have sharply escalated following a series of military confrontations. On May 7, 2025, India launched "Operation Sandor," targeting nine locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, which it described as terrorist infrastructure sites. This operation was in retaliation for a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, that killed 26 people, including tourists. India claimed that approximately 70 militants were killed in the strikes, which it said were conducted with "clinical efficiency" to avoid civilian casualties .

Pakistan condemned the strikes as an "act of war" and reported that five Indian fighter jets were shot down in retaliation, including three Rafales, one Su-30MKI, and one MiG-29. The Pakistani military also claimed to have destroyed a brigade headquarters and multiple checkposts. Pakistan reported 26 civilian deaths and 46 injuries from the airstrikes .
